Centimeters?? What the..!

      1cm = .39 inch
      10cm = 3.9 inch
      30.5 cm = 1 foot
      100cm = 1 meter
      1 meter = 3.24 feet or slighty
       more than a yard.

Celsius Explained.
There is still one nation left in this world where the Fahrenheit scale is used to measure temperature. You know who you are. Here is a quick Celsius refresher. Water freezes at 0c therefore anything between -1c and -10c is good for snow while still comfortable for people. As far as aprés in the village is concerned people will sit outside on the patios at about 5c. Yes I know, people have been known to sit outside at
-10c but those are the ones feeling no pain.

West Coast Weather

Most of our weather comes from the Pacific Ocean. When it hits us from the South West it comes more or less from the direction of Hawaii. It usually means warm air carrying lots of water we call those systems the Pineapple Express. Sometimes these systems go crazy bringing floodlevel amounts of rain those systems are said to carry a Tropical Punch. Nothing wrong with Hawaii of course but being in the snow business we like our weather systems to come from Alaska.

Sorry people but we've got a bit of a party going on around here and I've been sidetracked. Also the weather has been seriously weird. Right now the avalanch crews are setting off bombs in the alpine because we had an other fresh load while down here in the village it feels like spring.

Still not much change, it's going to be unsettled for a while. Watch the freezing level go up and down like a yoyo and hope for the occasional flurry. The town is starting to look like an Olympic town..

Freshies to be had in the "special places" higher up on the mountain. Good but soggy-ish conditions lower down

Got a little snow yesterday got a little today altogether not bad. Excellent conditions on top. Got a couple of unsettled days coming up, might see snow in the 2 to 5 cm range over the next three days.

Okay guys it's been quiet for a few days with no new snow and the existing stuff slowly packing down and icing over on the lower slopes. Today we got 10 cm of fresh sofar and more to come and oh yeah. Its falling top to bottom, just cleared the driveway :)

No new snow for the last few days. It's getting colder and according to the man snow is making its way over here with Monday delivering a serious dump.

And we've broken the 3 meter mark people. Pow everywhere. Seventh Heaven on Blackcomb did not open today because of up to 100km/hr windgusts. Lots of windblown snow up there. excellent riding down the heaven as well as the couloir extreme tomorrow.

I am actually okay with the above 0c temp here at the valleyfloor. It means I don't have to clear the driveway! Anyway we had 15cm of fresh pow yesterday and 17 more today and it's all from midstation up. Do I need to say more? Bring your pow board(s).

What a difference 400 meters can make. The village was disgusting we had 5 cm of snow on the valley floor. The snow turned to rain and slush later on in the morning. A few hundred meters up it snowed and it kept snowing. Only the lower chairs where open today because of avalance dangers and high winds

Jan.13 '09 05:00 PM Overcast Sky Var Vis. Wind 16k/h

The higher Alpine chairs are now open and knowledge of the mountain becomes very important right now. It was impossible to turn in some of the not so steep area's On the other hand if you where high enough and it was steep enough you would have had a great time.

Okay guys, read that new snow number with a bit of scepticism. It's heavy snow and the high chairs are not open so you can't get at it anyways.

It's pretty disgusting up there people. Rain almost top to bottom. The "snow" that fell in the Alpine was heavy as molasses. The best riding is at lower altitudes where the snow is nice and slushy.

The good conditions are still holding above midstation but a new dump would be seriously appreciated. Notice the inversion we're having, some weird fronts are moving in on us. We ought get big snow on the weekend but only above 1400 meters which is approximately the bottom of Emerald Express.

Okay, so I was gone for a while but then there wasn't much to report anyway. after that big dump on Monday this weird system moved in giving us an inversion with as much as 11c difference between top and bottom with the alpine being +3 and the base at -8c. Very weird indeed! As far as fresh snow is concerned we may get some on Monday.

We got 21 cm's today but believe me it was your basic west coast concrete. It's going to get colder so the snow should dry out. Nobody's been in the alpine sinds this dump so when it opens it's going to be good.

Dec.18 '09 05:00 PM Overcast Var Vis. Wind 21 k/h

Okay so it has been snowing off and on up there bringing the base up to 216 again. The freezing level got quite high tough. Bottom of Emerald chair I would guess. Lot's of snow in the alpine, get up there if you can.

Dec.15 '09 05:00 PM Overcast Var Vis. Wind 26 k/h

Strangely warm on top. Had to push 12 cm of snow of the driveway today, more to come. Off piste riding is doable again, it's still a bit dust on crust though. We should get an other 10c's tonight and the same or more tomorrow. If we get those 10 to 25cm's life will be good again!

Dec.13 '09 02:00 PM Overcast Var Vis. Wind 20 k/h
Peak -13c Alpine -9c Valley -4c New Snow 0cm Base 169 cm

We did actually have some snow on the mountains but it was very localized and with the wind blowing it around some runs got a nice layer while others got nothing. Fresh snow is coming though, it's snowing lightly right now. More flurries to come today and tomorrow with some significant dumps coming mid-week.

Dec.10 '09 05:00 PM Clear sky Unltd Vis. Wind 6 k/h
Peak -7c Alpine -12c Valley -9c New Snow 0cm Base 174 cm

A mild inversion made it warmer on top then lower down. Weird you're doing okay, you start riding down and all of a sudden your nose starts to freeze. The man still insists that warmer air carrying snow is a'coming. I'll tell you if and when it happens.

Dec. 08 '09 05:00 PM Clear sky Unltd Vis. Wind 4 k/h
Peak -16c Alpine -13c Valley -7c New Snow 0cm Base 175 cm

So I was a way for three days well, you didn't miss much. It's still too cold and the snow is still frozen solid. The man still seems to be convinced that we'll get some snow on Friday but it may just be some flurries.

Dec. 05 '09 05:00 PM Clear sky Unltd Vis. Wind 12 k/h
Peak -16c Alpine -11c Valley -3c New Snow 0cm Base 177 cm

It's Cold! It's icy. Tomorrow we'll have more cold and it will still be icy. People are actually riding the lower slopes where the snowguns are going, it's more fun that way. The weather will stay like this for a while. Did I mention it was Cold!?

Dec. 03 '09 05:00 PM Clear sky Unltd Vis. Wind 8 k/h
Peak -4c Alpine -1c Valley -3c New Snow 0cm Base 184 cm

Not much change I am afraid. We've got some serious cold coming this way over the weekend. By the way you can ride down again on Whistler, you're still officially out of bounds but they did run groomer all the way down and all the ditches are filled!

Dec. 02 '09 05:00 PM Clear sky Unltd Vis. Wind 9 k/h
Peak -1c Alpine 0c Valley -1c New Snow 0cm Base 184 cm

And there you have it, a nice inversion. Warm on top colder on the bottom. The snow was softer as you went high so Seventh Heaven on Blackcomb was great, the lower on the mountain you got the crunchier it became. The snowguns were, and still are, blowing full blast on the lower slopes. We may get some snow on Friday but mostly we're looking at much of the same for a while.

Nov. 30 '09 05:00 PM Overcast Var Vis. Wind 20 k/h
Peak -11c Alpine -6c Valley 0c New Snow 8cm Base 185 cm

So there we are, temperatures are back to where we want them to be plus we have 8 fresh cm's. We're looking at a clear week coming up, all in all not a bad way to be rolling into December.

Nov. 28 '09 05:00 PM Overcast Var Vis. Wind 4 k/h
Peak -3c Alpine 0c Valley 3c New Snow 7 cm Base 195 cm

No big change, the extra 7cm we got did make the lower parts of the mountain rideable again but it was still hard work. The higher area's like Harmony Bowl where great on top and gradually crunchier as you descended. More snow's-a coming things should improve gradually.

Nov. 27 '09 09:00 AM Clear Unltd Vis. Wind 4 k/h
Peak -8c Alpine -6c Valley -1c New Snow 0 cm Base 198 cm

After that top-to-bottom rain event two days ago the lower sections froze up quite nicely and where almost unrideable. Everything above the bottom of Emerald Chair was good to excellent. Where going to have a sunny warmer day, bottom half should be warm enough to loosen up. More snow tonight.

Nov. 25 '09 10:00 AM Overcast Var Vis. Wind 30 k/h
Peak 0c Alpine 0c Valley 3c New Snow 0 cm Base 204 cm

It looks pretty grim out there people but actually the worst is over. We had a warm rainy front come through here and it's still lingering but the temperatures are actually dropping now and wet snow is falling in the alpine again. The man says that the temps will keep dropping and we'll see 10 to 15 fresh cm's falling as far down as Olympic Station by tonight.

It's the quiet before the storm around here. Thursday is American Thanksgiving, a long weekend for a lot of 'mercans who have been looking at our websites and counting the days to get here to bash some pow. Don't worry we'll have an other 5 to 10cm today and 5 more tomorrow. Yep it's snowing right now!

What with about 70cm of fresh yesterday today's 14cm is, well, nothing really. We're getting spoiled around here we're looking at 5, 5 to 15 and 15 to 20cm days in the forecast and people are going well you know like, whatever. Yeah, read those snow measurements again and remember it's only Nov. the 16th! Yesterday was not a big dump day but we had a serious blizzard going on. Righ now the wind has died down a bit but we have some warm air coming in, it's raining in the valley. How high will the freezing level go and for how long? Stay tuned.

So here we are. The bikepark has been closed for two weeks now, not much to do around here until the snow starts falling. Guess what - it started falling seriously today. Wet snow making it all the way to the valley bottom and exellent dry snow higher up. This snow will stick around and become the 09/10 base. Now where did I put that wax?

We had an interesting week guys (sorry I was away) we got 37 centimeters of good snow so we were riding pow in April! It's a little warm up there right now and raining (it was snowing earlier) but tomorrow we should be back to regular spring skiing.

Yes indeed you read that correctly. It's April 13 and we just got 16 cm, as a matter of fact we got 19 over the last 48 hrs and it's still snowing as I write this. Keep in mind that we already put some our garden funiture out and there it sits, covered in snow! Come and get it while it lasts.
