         Whistler Snow Report
is an un-official snow report brought to you from the ground floor that is to say,
I am sitting here on the ground floor looking up as I write it.
If you need to contact me you can send e-mail to me@dualmountain.com
Jan. 31     0 cm  to  265cm
Gorgeous! Excellent! Radical! Bodacious!
In case I did not make myself clear. The sky is clean, the temp is just right, the snow is happening and you?
You should have been here.
Jan. 30     +4 cm  to  269cm
I guess the reports of the demise of this year's El Nino were greatly exaggerated. The good news for the day? It's cooler.
The better news. More snow's a'coming.
Jan. 29     trace  to 268cm
I don't mind these systems rolling through here. After all you're paying for snow and this is how we get it buttuh..
Would it be too much to ask to have the precip at night and the clear skies during the day instead of the other way around?
Nothing is falling right now but the sky looks as if it's about to burst.
Jan. 28     trace(?)  to  270cm
Whistler Mountain reports 3°C in the valley yet I look outside and snow is falling right in front of me. I wonder what valley they are measuring?
As far as snow is concerned. My trees, which were empty yesterday evening hold at least an inch of the stuff. Certainly more than a trace.
Jan. 27     +2 cm  to  272cm
Temperatures did drop. Got 2 cm on the Renoir's Winter Garden driveway.
Sun is trying to break through but we've been told there are more Pacicfic systems on the way so at this point it looks like it can go either way.
Jan. 26     +15 cm  to  273cm
Skiing conditions up there are out of this world. Powder up to your ears!
Down here we could do with a temperature drop. The snowline is halfway up the valley lifts or Olympic Station for those of you that know Whistler Mountain.
Jan. 25     +7 cm  to   269
Fair to Good was the opinion of our Renoir's Winter Garden guests. The snow was considered excellent which may be because we had a meter+ dropped on us over the last week but the visibility was spotty at best. It was cool watching the mogul mashers come mashing out of the fog though.
Today is better. A little cooler and no precip.
Jan. 24     +37 cm  to   267cm
While the Owens Corning Freestylers are mashing moguls it's raining solid in the vally.
If you were wondering if todays report was late?
Yes it was. Cheers.
Jan. 23     +13 cm  to   230cm
I just shoveled an other half a foot off the driveway. This stuff was fairly heavy. More is falling, it's supposed to keep falling through the day. Also it's supposed to warm up and turn to rain down here but at the moment it's -1 and dropping.
Jan. 22     +8 cm  to   225cm
We seem to be stuck in this weather pattern. Clouds passing through making the visibility 'variable', as the promo people put it, and the freezing level going up and down like the tides.
El Nino is supposed to start dwindling away to nothing any day now which is too bad. It's nice to be able blame something when the weather bites.
Jan. 21     +5 cm  to   220cm
As you can see I've been putting the daily snowfall amounts together with the date. We've had snow every day for the last week yet the snow pack has been stable at about 220cm.
Is somebody up there eating it, or what?
Jan. 20     + 0.5 cm to   220cm
The sun is really trying down here. I hear it's unlimited visibility on top and the skiing is mind boggeling.
Isn't it time you get over here and start boggeling yours.
Jan. 19     +8 cm
I hope my description of "hazy sun" as a visibility guide tells you something. I think the temperature range right now is excellent (OK the valley could do with a one degree drop) the snow rocks and the visibility, well, sometimes I see the sun trying to get through and than, a minute later, some mist rolls in on its way to... uhhhh?
Where does mist go, after it's done?
Jan. 18     +2 cm
Yesterday our Renoir's Winter Garden guests were in Seventh Heaven on Seventh Heaven.
If this makes no sense to you come and check out Blackcomb mountain.
What can I tell you about today? It's raining down here but snowing about 100m up. I can tell by the snow on the trees. No snow on mine. Lots of snow on the ones higher up the mountain. I believe I already explained that we only use the finest in weather observation techniques here at Renoir's.
Jan. 17     +8 cm
Here is a new twist. Did you note that the temperature on the valley floor says -0°C? A silly thing of course but this is what it means.
It is 0°C right now but the temperature is on a downward trend +0°C will mean the opposite.
Pass it on.
Jan. 16
The Renoir's Winter Garden guests are unanimous. Skiing is great! Endless packed powder with fresh supplies arriving as we speak. (so to speak)
Me? I am dealing with the ice on the driveway care of yesterday's thaw/freeze.
Go figure.
Jan. 15
Enough already! You've been asking for warmer weather. You Got It!
Don't overdo it we are overshooting the mark. The temperatures are just where you want them to be up the hill but here in the village it's a mess. I've got ice on the driveway because of a melt-freeze cycle.
I need a day of +0 temperatures to clean it up.
I guess I better start dancing.
Jan. 14
It's here! I shoveled half a foot of the driveway.. Twice! Yesterday afternoon and this morning.
Just when I heaved the last shovel full it started snowing again.
This is the excellent stuff by the way, light, fluffy. The type of snow where, when you are sitting in a stalled lift you think, I could jump off right here, it looks so good. (but you don't 'cause your mom won't let you.)
Jan. 13
It arrived and it's still arriving. Snow and warmer temperatures!
As some of you wrote me. Me you would say, I am worried if I come up there I'll freeze'm off. Worry no more. Things are back to normal. -7°C on top is an excellent temperature to ski in and when you get down here were it's still cold (I still think that's weird) just jump in the Renoir's Winter Garden Hot Tub.
Jan. 12
As you can imagine everyone here in Whistler is going to the top where it's nice and warm.
I do however detect some very high stratos something or other clouds (the really high whispy ones) moving in. I think we may have some snow on the way. Stay tuned.
Jan. 11
Is it warm enough for you? A sunny -9°C, a blue sky, no line-ups for the hot chocolate.
If this is not living than, what is?
Jan. 10
As you know I am writing this from the valley floor were it is a balmy -18°C right now.
If you are going up today the key word for the day is.. Thermal Underwear!
Jan. 9
Only in Whistler! Cold below. Not so cold in the middle. Cold on top. Let's call it an inversion sandwich.
Regardless, pack yourself up well especially those precious parts and enjoy the gorgeous day out there. Do Not forget that camera!
Jan. 8
Cold. Crisp. Clear. What more is there to say?
Recommendation for the day. Layer up, do a run, check into one of the hut's, drink hot chocolate, do an other run, check in ... You get the picture.
Jan. 7
Well, I guess we didn't break the 2 meter mark after all. As a matter of fact today is one of those days.
Layer up, bring shades and remember a face plant on ice. Hurts!
Jan. 6
It's still coming down. It's been doing so on and off since yesterday's report.
We are having a warming trend. The snow on the driveway was a little heavier than yesterday.
Today we'll break the 2 meter level on top. If there are any Inuit reading this. I need some of those 24 names for snow that you have.
Today's snow is really fine and coming down on an angle. Any suggestions?
Jan. 5
This morning I shoveled 10cm of the type of powder people dream about. By now there is an other 10cm.
What is that? You couldn't make? Let me say it again.
I feel your pain!
Jan. 4
If there is one thing about this El Nino year that stands out it's all the inversions we're having.
Minus 11 down here minus 9 on top! What gives?
There is definitely snow in the air. A few measly flakes are drifting down right now but the sky looks ready to give it up.
Jan. 2
The word for the day is "Crisp" as in, wear layers and leave the brass monkey at home.
By the way that snow yesterday kept coming and we ended up with half a foot.
Conditions? Awesome!
New Years Day 1998
As you can see the New Year brought the pack up to 158cm (from 148cm).
To be sure it was raining down here during the New Years bash but guess what, it just started snowing down here at ground floor.
Better get out the snow shovel I reckon.
So this is 1998. Well.. so far so good.
Have a good one!
Dec. 31 1997
The snowpack is now 148cm. Yesterday it was 155cm. I guess that's why they call it a pack.
It puts this year's pack slightly below the average for the last 15 years. The weather office assures us of a cooling trend with lots of snow.
Eventhough it still looks a bit grey down here the skiing guests at Renoir's Winter Garden tell me the skiing up there is excellent.
Happy New Year! And, remember early January is the best time to visit. No crowds, Good deals.
Dec. 30 1997
A little less bleak because the temperature is swinging in the right direction. I.E. going down.
A bit of blue sky showed itself this morning through the haze. Those who blinked missed it though.
Dec. 29 1997
Bleak!
Do I need to say more? How about rain, no visibility, freezing point at mid-mountain.
Tell you one thing about rain though. It's very easy to get it off the Renoir driveway.
Dec. 28 1997
They're coming through fast and furious now. The systems that is. I am shoveling every day. This morning the snow on the driveway is wet and heavy. I think its just a tad above freezing (We use the latest in weather reporting technologies here at Renoir's Winter Garden).
Visibility? I can't see the tops (or even the middle) from here.
Dec. 26 1997
We are taking delivery right now.
We were promised a loaded Pacific system, it arrived and is being unloaded as I write this.
It's like ordering delivery via FedEx.
Christmas 1997
Today is much like yesterday only better!
The sky is so blue it hurts your eyes. Forget goggles bring your shades! (Bring your T-shirt as well, we're having an other inversion it's cold down here but warm up there)
The man says! There is an other Pacific system on the way. All you powderhounds! Ready for New Years?
Dec. 24
So here we are. It's Christmas Eve. It's crystal clear from top to bottom. We've had nice load delivered over the last few days.
It doesn't really get much better then this. The village is hopping but uh, where are you?
Have Merry Christmas wherever you are.
Dec. 23
Well, that system did arrive with half a foot of snow. They've just about hit the 2 meter mark in the Alpine. (That's taller then you or I, unless you're a basketball player)
Visibility is limited looking at it from down here.
Dec. 22
Beautiful. That was the verdict of our guests yesterday. It was clear and crisp with a view to kill for. This morning it is still clear but there is definitely a system coming. It's starting to gather around the tops of the mountains.. We've been promised an other 20 cm today!
Dec. 19
We've got big ones, little ones, fat ones and skinny ones. But, most of all, we've got an endless supply.
It started snowing this morning (after an overnight drop of about 4cm) and it's still going strong.
Weatherman says!.. One foot by tonight.
Dec. 18
Awesome! That's the verdict of Renoir's Winter Garden guests about yesterday's skiing.
After I wrote yesterday's report (11AM-ish) the weather cleared around 12PM and the temperature started dropping. Overnight we had 4cm of snow so light that I could almost blow it of the driveway.
Conditions today? Light clouds, 0c on the ground, visibility good.
Dec. 17
Buckets! (As in, it's coming down in). The temperature has been swinging around the freezing point down here but it got stuck above freezing yesterday evening.
Sure makes it easier to clean the Renoir's Winter Garden driveway.
You're worried about the snow this season? Worry no more, what's water down here is 8cm of the good stuff on top.
Dec. 16
I just shoveled 10 cm of the Renoir's Winter Garden driveway.
I hope you're happy now.
There is an other system overhead. The valleyfloor is warming up but it's great up there.
Dec. 15
Well, We're happening now. It hasn't really stopped since yesterday.
Weatherman says there are several systems hanging out on the Pacific waiting for their turn.
Dec. 14
Nothing much to report the last few days. Clear with an inversion. Spring conditions but no new snow.
Today however the KID (El Nino) is back!
Right now (11am) it's snowing outside but the temperature (at least down here) is doing the YoYo thing that is to say it swings around the freezing point.
Looks like we'll have some fresh snow for you when you get here.
Dec. 11
Excellent Day! Clear as a bell. I can see people skiing from here.
Not to cold on top either. (about -4c)
No new snow though, can't have it all I guess.
Dec. 10
The Nino is nowhere to be seen. It looks like a regular winter wonderland out there. I just shoveled an other 5 cm and this time it looks like it's staying.
They'll be skiing into the village soon. You can ski into the valley from Whistler Mountain because they made all that snow for the race.
Dec. 8
4 cm! I know it's true because I got it on the driveway as well. It's warming up down here but it looks good up there (inversion's gone).
Sun's peeking through.
Dec.7
Clear weather and inversion still holding. Time to talk to our skiing guests. (see sponsor to the right of this report.)
Skiing Excellent. 7th heaven (for those who know Blackcomb) actually turns a bit too soft later in the aft. (This Is December!) Line-ups no problem lots of variety in skiable terrain. If you park your car at the Base II station you'll be able to ski (carefully) right up to it at the end of the day.
Dec. 4
Cool and Clear!
Here is something interesting. It's -2c down here. You would figure it to be -10c up on top. Not So! We've had an inversion the last few days. It's warm (relatively) up there. Together with good snow and the view. It's like spring skiing in December.
What? You couldn't be here?
I feel your pain.
Dec. 2
It's cool and clear from the floor to the top today.
We could do with a load but let's not complain, skiing was great yesterday and today looks even better.
Dec. 1
Gorgeous day today! It looks like spring skiing up there.
The weather has been strange (at least here on the floor). They've got about a meter and a half of the stuff and a view to kill for on top but still no skiing into the village.
Nov. 29
Well.. The KID's really done it this time!
I just shoveled half a foot of the driveway. It looks like there is at least one more foot to come.
Guess what. The men's downhill is canceled..... Too much snow! (where have I heard that before)
Nov. 28 What is the KID doing??
El Nino dropped 39 centimeters last night but it is keeping the valley floor too warm!
I saw a Pacific ocean temperature graphic on TV. Warm water is welling up from Chile to Washington State!
Good thing we are 2000 feet up here in Whistler. Snow is starting about 200 meter up from where I am standing. It looks gorgeous from mid mountain to the top.
Nov. 27
Big, Fat, Happy and coming down!
They are finally making it to the valley floor!
We've been promised a load. This time I believe it.
Stay tuned.

Nov. 25 It's been snowing on and off (it's on/off as I write this) but, more would be better!
Whistler Mountain opens tomorrow!
They've got about 5 feet on top. Conditions? Fair.
Nov. 22 & 23
It finally started snowing in the valley.
Mind you the temperature at this level yo-yo's around freezing.
We've got snow down here but right now it's turning wet.
In the Alpine and at mid mountain the flakes are big, fat and lazy. Come on up and ride them!!

Nov. 21. Blackcomb's Open!!
They've got about a meter on top. We've got clouds again so I can't see from here but we had a trace at the lower elevations. It's freezing from mid mountain up so they are still making snow also the weather man (Yeah Right.. Him!) says, more's a'coming.

Nov. 19. Not Impressed!!
Clouds are gone. That load they were going to dump?  Make that a whimper. However, they are still making the stuff and we have been promised a big Pacific system that's absolutely full of it.

Nov. 18 Clouds still overhead. Can't tell what's going on.

Nov. 17 Snow has fallen overnight. (just a trace at the valley floor)
The clouds look like they are not going anywhere before they dump a load!!

Nov. 16 Clouds moving in. Nothing falling out yet.
Nov. 14. Still cold. Snow guns are blasting.
There is enough snow for the official opening (in one week)
One week and plenty of water to go.
Enough to straighten the edges and tuck in the corners.
Nov. 13.
That trace of snow that fell in October?
It was mostly washed away!!
However it's been cold and crisp these last few days.
They are making snow 24 hours a day. (We've got the downhill cup happening November 29th so we better have something to ski on)

We've got the cold. Let's have some precip.

Oct. 10th
Wow! There is snow within 200 meters of the village today!
It's been cold and wet enough down here.
Of course we do it all for you! When you get here the snow will be ready.
Service with a smile!

By the way. I'm outta here until November 7th
There will be no updates 'till then.

Cheers.

October 7th 1997.

The first trace has arrived  The top runs are covered.
They are also making the stuff. (We don't want to get caught without snow during the early December racing season).

Meanwhile we are all wondering what El Nino will do for us snow-wise.
(The last big one in 1982/83 dumped close to 9 meters of the good stuff)
