Whistler resort Sept 1999

Well this was it, the last summer of the century. I've seen better. It's been and still is a great year for bear spotting. I love these final days of summer. It's like the party is over but no one wants to go home.

This is the big month. Everybody is on holidays and most you drop by. Hé you're welcome. The snow is finally gone from the hiking trails on top of Whistler mountain, you'll actually be able do some alpine hiking

Whistler Resort July 26th

The place is hopping. Summer is a whole different ballgame for us. In the winter folks visit us from all over the world to ski on our mountains, we know why they come here, they know why they come here. Summer is different we've got lakes, mountain bike trails, hiking, fishing, golfing, white water rafting, you name it -but- we are obviously not the only ones so we try harder.
There's action in the streets, bike acrobats, artists from all over the world, music in the mountains, plus all the other entertainment such as a trapeze, a climbing wall etc., oh and, let's not forget the 100 odd worldclass restaurants, bars, nightclubs and other gathering spots. They don't exactly close for the summer either.

Well we pulled it off. We had rain in the morning but the sun actually made an appearance  while the parade was on. It looks like we're getting to the end of this weather. Summer should be back by next Tuesday (the 6th)

Sunshine!! After weeks of solid grey we have some sunny breaks. Who knows, we may even get some warmth into this valley. If this keeps up we'll have an umbrella free July 1st (Canada Day) celebration after all.

It Hath Began!!

We had a few cold days in the beginning of the week. Couldn't see the tops. It's clear and sunny now and guess what. Yup it's there. You can see it on the very top 
runs. It's just a trace mind you but.. It's a sign of things to come!! Time to get my season pass. See y'all in Whistler.

New snow 0 cm, to 365 cm

Well, Ladies en Gentlemen. This it it, the end of the 98/99 ski season as far as "The Snowreport" is concerned. It's been a corker. I am outta here for the next few weeks and when I return it's time to start doing summer stuff (like riding the glacier). It's a great day to quit. Blue skies, 365 cm, Soleil 6000 going on, beverages in the sun on the various patios. Check in every once in a while. I'll be reporting anything to do with coming 99/00 season when it happens. New snow trace, to 370 cm

It doesn't stop does it. We keep adding to the base and packing it down. We've been hovering around the 370 cm mark since April 26 or so. It looks like a fair to good day today, some high clouds but the vis looks good from down here and we're in for sunny periods.

Low clouds and variable vis I'm afraid. It's warmer up there now so none of this "freezing the brass ones off in May" anymore. I'll be retiring the snow report for the season in a few days because I'll be elsewhere. We'll do it again bigger and better next season. Anybody got any ideas?

New snow 0 cm to 365 cm

A fair day today after an excellent one yesterday. Soleil 6000 the Whistler Mountain May celebration is rolling along. The slushbowl event last Saturday was a bit of a (pardon the pun) washout. The air temperature was too cold so the riders either knew forsure they where going to make it or they didn't try. I think we had a total of three dunkings.

Looks like an excellent day coming up. It's warmer than yesterday the clouds are high and there is little wind. Yesterday was less excellent. The clouds were lower, we had some sunny periods broken up by the occasional fog bank or flurry moving through.

Yes! We had snow on the Renoir's Winter Garden roof this morning! It's gone now, the sun is trying very hard to pop through. The man says tommorow is going to be good to excellent. (Today is iffy) All in all a rude awakening but good prospects for a resumed spring ski party.

Today's not recommended for your skiing enjoyment. Its raining down here and it's only 0c on top so it may rain all the way to the peak. I am not about to find out.

These are not the golden spring days I'd expected of May. I went up yesterday and it could have been February 3rd. Lots of pow mind you but cold. Some sunny periods but also some flurries. It looks like today is going to be the same.

8 cm. Not a bad dump.., for March. This is May. What's wrong with this picture? The day started out disgusting but it broke up late in the morning. The man says it'll stay unsettled for the next few days. Great :(

What can I tell you. We're having a slight reversal of roles here. What we got in April we should have now and vice versa. Mind you I'll never say no to a bit of late seasonal snow in the alpine. Skiing fresh powder in May? Only in Whistler.

Welcome to Soleil 6000. Whistler Mountain is really going to do it this year. I mean 10 cm of fresh pow! On May 1st!? Gimme a break. Excellent day today but the high presure ridge that's been hanging around for a the last few days is weakening. We're in for some unsettled wheather. Meanwhile the folks downstream are getting serious about their dikes and levees. Political poobahs are flown around in helicopters looking serious but optimistic. The big melt is still a month away.

Welcome to our Winter Wonder Land. I kid you not!! We woke up this morning with about 3 cm of snow! I have to write this in a hurry because it's melting by now but still, snow, on April 26th? Give me a break.
What's with the "New snow 0 cm" you ask? I guess the 'Measurement Pole Reader Guy' is having a bad hair day.

There you have it. An other season comes to an end. Yes indeed today is Blackcomb's final day of this most excellent 98/99 season. Whistler mountain will stay open until June 11th. When Whistler mountain closes Blackcomb opens up the next day (June 12th) for the summer season. Plenty time left to get up here and carve some turns I'ld say.

As promised I went up yesterday and gazed upon the pole of measurements. I know, it was a sacrifice but he' I was happy to do it. Anyway, the officials are correct. According to The Pole we still have 385 cm to go. If you ever feel like gazing yourself let me know and I will direct you Pole-wards.

Sofar that Pacific system has been a bit of a whimper. We've been promised some snow for tomorrow. We'll see. Meanwhile this is the final World Ski & Snowboard festival day and the place is hopping under general "sit on the patio and sip your fav" conditions.

U'oh. The pack is compacting quickly now. 409 cm! Before you know it we'll be below 4 meters and your other brother Daryll (see Feb 25) will be snowfree. Anyway, it is spring and the all around excellence is holding. A weak Pacific system is approaching but what? Me worry? Nah!

There you have it. After a grungy start yesterday turned out to be a reasonable to good day after all. No snow though (say that 10 times, fast). Today is outrageous -5c in the alpine, blue skies -1c in the valley (meaning no slush at the bottom). Come and get it is all I can say.

Pretty grungy out there. We have a small Pacific system coming through. The man says it'll be gone in a day. Meanwhile it's supposed to drop 10 more cm in the higher elevations. Since it's only 2c down here and -6 in the alpine I think those elevation aren't really all that high. As long as my driveway is in the lower elevations I'm cool.

Looks like an OK day today. It doesn't look as if we're going to get more snow. The man says we're in for mixed sun and clouds. Considering that we got 20 cm of fresh pow over the last 3 days I would say conditions are good.

April does what she will. No Kidding. Snow one minute, (literally) sun the next. Looks cool though, the mountains look like it's mid January but the temperature says spring! Come on down and have a beverage of your choice on your favorite terrace.

Yesterday turned into a bit of bag later in the day. Morning skiing was excellent but in the aft clouds closed in and dropped a load. Hence the 7 cm. Today we reap the rewards. Fresh pow, blue skies, you know the rest.

I am back and I have survived April 1st again. I hear the Whistler Mountain patrol wasn't so lucky. As I understand it the groomers groomed the frontdoor of the patrol shack right out of sight. The boys and girls had to shovel their way in. Conditions are good. High broken clouds, unlimited vis, good snow. See ya there.

Could somebody help me out here? I am running out of ways to say how weird this season is. Who has ever heard of a ski season that lasts into JUNE!? All I can say is get your butt up here in June and bring your bike, your blades AND your board!

I just shoveled almost a foot of snow from the Renoir's Winter Garden driveway. I Kid You Not!! It's just about April. Easter is around the corner. Why do I get the feeling that mother nature is laying an early April fools trick on us? By the way. I guess you've heard? Whistler mountain is staying open until June 11th.

And you thought winter was over. Silly you. There is some snow falling down here as I write this. You noticed that the pack actually increased over the last few days. This is good. This means April skiing is going to be a blast. This is important because April is when the locals (including yours truly) ski.

Hmmm. Where do the days go? That 18 cm by the way is the combined fall for March 23-24. Most of it fell at night so I leave it up to you to imagine what the conditions where like yesterday. Today we have some heavy low clouds that threaten rain/snow depending on elevation. I guess we can't blame March for giving us some heavy wheather. It'ld be like blaming a bear for being catholic. (with apologies to non-english speakers)

That's more like it. Not a bright sunny day mind you. One of those days where the sun burns through the high clouds occasionally while some very thin mistbanks roll through the valleys on their way to who knows where. Good temp. Excellent conditions.

Wouldn't you know it. The calendar catches up to us with its official "Yo Spring's here" message on the same day that we're back in clouds. After 3 days of solid sunshine (and me with the sunburn to prove it) I am unimpressed.

Come on down! It doesn't get much better than this. We've been waiting for it, praying for it, cursed it when an other couple of feet fell on the driveway but it's here and it's good! By the way, for those of you looking for an all around experience. The golfcourses in Squamish (35 min) are open just in case you want to vary your diet.

Why do have the feeling that this season is going to roll into the next one without any pause or letup? Could it be that it is Snowing(?) out there again. The way it looks it may as well be early January! I am going to have the rescind the official proclamation of springskiing I am afraid. Leave the shades and the sunscreen. Bring your goggles!

Excellent! What more can I tell you fresh snow, blue skies. It's what we've been waiting for. By the way, for those of you still making plans. It's going to be tough finding a place to stay in Whistler anytime before Easter. April looks great though. As far as next season is concerned. If you are serious about coming down book Now!

Some of you asked me. Me, you'ld say. Me, I thought you declared spring skiing to have arrived a few days back. So what's with this whopping 50plus cm of snow over the last two days?
It's simple ofcourse, most things are. That 50 centimeters? That's spring-snow, come and get some.

It's a mite grey out there I must say. There is also more snow on the way, or so the man says. One of these days I will explain to you why I prefer mountain living. But  today is not that day.

Allright, let's do it. Let's officially proclaim spring skiing to have arrived. Right now we have some really thin low clouds swirling around the tops but the sun is beating them up and have the feeling they'll be gone before the days is out.

And you thought spring had arrived! What, you didn't? Well I certainly did. As a matter of fact it's sunny and warm (relatively) outside right now with clear skies (off and on) and soft snow. So what's with that 15cm you ask. Not really a spring sort of thing you say. He' this is Whistler you know. It's what we do.

Well those flurries (see yesterday) did not amount to much. 4cm? woopdiedoo! We've got solid cloud overhead but not much is falling out them at the moment. Temperatures are starting to become more spring like. All in all a decent day just be careful, that flat light can really throw you.

This is the one you've been waiting for. Blue skies from end to end. Minimal wind, snow by the ton and ski runs in excellent shape that go on and on until you can't stand it no mo'.

It's a gorgeous...no wait it's snowing big ti... hold a second it's a primo day out there it uhhh... hold on there is more snow... Could Someone Make Up Their Mind Already!! I hear there is light wind up there and variable vis. I can believe it.

It looked great earlier this morning, Right now some clouds are rolling in but it looks as though they are going to keep on rolling. Yesterdays dump was an other major one considering that it is solidly March by now. Some people told me they wanted to shovel the snow from their roof but there was nowhere to shove it too! Go figure.

Do I detect.. No It can't be.. Was it, spring in the air? For one fleeting morning it felt as if spring skiing had arrived however YAPS (Yet Another Pacific System) snuck in behind the spring weather and is delivering as we speak. Those of you gearing up for the most spectacular spring skiing in decades I hope you realize that we are doing it all for you.

New snow 18 cm to 438 cm

It's snowing again. Don't tell anyone but there actually are some heretics around here who (very quietly) are going 'round saying... Enough already!! Can you believe that? Hairless woozes that they are. Yesterday's ski excursion by the way was a mixed blessing. I remember one extraordinairy faceplant somewhere on the Horstman were both skies came off. I also left a pole basket behind. I guess I'll have to wait for the glacier to melt one of these years to get it back.
