Centimeters?? What the..!

      1cm = .39 inch
      10cm = 3.9 inch
      30.5 cm = 1 foot
      100cm = 1 meter
      1 meter = 3.24 feet or slighty
       more than a yard.

Celsius Explained.
There is still one nation left in this world where the Fahrenheit scale is used to measure temperature. You know who you are. Here is a quick Celsius refresher. Water freezes at 0c therefore anything between -1c and -10c is good for snow while still comfortable for people. As far as aprés in the village is concerned people will sit outside on the patios at about 5c. Yes I know, people have been known to sit outside at
-10c but those are the ones feeling no pain.

West Coast Weather

Most of our weather comes from the Pacific Ocean. When it hits us from the South West it comes more or less from the direction of Hawaii. It usually means warm air carrying lots of water we call those systems the Pineapple Express. Sometimes these systems go crazy bringing floodlevel amounts of rain those systems are said to carry a Tropical Punch. Nothing wrong with Hawaii of course but being in the snow business we like our weather systems to come from Alaska.

Ok, this is the last of the sunny days. Weather is moving in tomorrow. Will we get rain or ice, have we been naughty or nice? Stay tuned.

Ok, so that small weather systems came and went, all it did was put some clouds in the sky yesterday. The clouds are gone and the high pressure area from hell is back but a real Pacific front carrying real snow is still on track. Arrival expected next Monday.

Weather is moving in. Finally! It's ahead of schedule and is is not going to bring much if any snow. Next week Monday and onwards is still the forecast for some serious dumping. (See it when I believe it..or whatever)

There seems to be an end in sight to this high pressure area from hell. Monday should bring some fresh snow. Anybody else feel like not celebrating until the flakes hit the slopes?

Freezing level during the day way up there. Even at night it doesn't drop below 0c in the alpine because of an inversion. Somebody remind me, this is still February is it not?

Feb. 22 '05 09:00 AM Blue Sky Unltd Vis. Wind SE 5 k/h
Peak 1c Alpine 1c Valley -4c NewSnw 0cm  Base 132 cm

A slight inversion is softening up the snow on top right now. Get up there before it turns too soft! Oh yeah, forget about layering up a t-shirt and a jacket will do nicely.

Feb. 21 '05 09:00 AM Blue Sky Unltd Vis. Wind S 5 k/h

Blue skies as far as the eye can see not only in our familiar 3 dimensions but in time as well. A warming trend is happening which will soften up the snow during the day.

So much for that "mix of sun and cloud with a 30 percent chance of flurries". So far there is nothing but blue sky as far as the eye can see. Oh wait a minute I can see two puffs of fluff in the east. I tell you one thing there is no snow in dem dar clouds

Be here early in the morning and ride the freshly groomed runs. Later on in the day the snow gets scraped off, that's the time to stick to the edges of the runs. This is spring skiing in February, enjoy it!

The inversion is gone, snow has fallen, more's on the way. There aren't going to be any epic dumps but a few fresh layers would be nice, we'll have to leave the rest to the groomers.

Feb. 11 '05 08:00 AM Clear Sky Unltd Vis. Wind SE 20 k/h

We've got a temperature inversion happening right now apparently a storm front is on the way but nothing big. If there is to be any fresh snow it'll arrive this weekend.

Another warm dry spring day coming up. I's been gorgeous up there for the last few days, as always we could use a lot more snow but if we can't have that this is pretty good too. Weird weather is coming this way again, stay tooned.

Unsettled is the word for the rest of the week I'd say. Snow is still in the forecast but sceptics that we are we're making it ourselves by the truckload. Conditions right now are good.

This week is shaping up as follows. First we get cold clear weather so we can make snow on the lower runs and get them back to normal than the freezing level will rise a bit but we'll get a 20 cm dump on Friday with more over the weekend. Sounds good?

Feb. 06 '05 11:00 AM Overcast Sky Var Vis. Wind SE 30k/h
Peak -13c Alpine -10c Valley -1c NewSnw 0cm  Base 143 cm

The snow guns are operating 24/7 the bottom runs are getting back to normal and several of the couloirs are now open. Some of the tree runs are still sketchy, we need an other couple o'feet for them to become solidly rideable.

Feb. 05 '05 08:00 AM Clear Sky Unltd Vis. Wind SW 25 k/h
Peak -12c Alpine -11c Valley -1c NewSnw 1cm  Base 145 cm

Cold and clear, time to fire up the snowguns and start rebuilding those lower runs. Winter's back and all's well. They did not open the Peak yesterday (still clearing avalanche hazards) so today there should be some excellent riding up there.

Ok, that mini pineapple is overhead right now, we don't want precip for the next 24 hours(yeah, like that's is gonna happen). On the morrow things will improve right into the weekend with a nice coldfront heading this way

Feb. 02 '05 08:00 AM Overcast Sky VarVis. Wind SW 50 k/h
Peak -2c Alpine 2c Valley 5c NewSnw 1cm  Base 129 cm

We have a bit of a pineapple coming through but this one will just be a whimper compared to the last one. By Friday the freezing level will drop again and it will drop all the way down to the village on Sunday.

Feb. 01 '05 10:00 AM Overcast Sky VarVis. Wind S 40 k/h

Freezing level is nice and low, we may get some snow today and tonight. It's really blowing up there which should make for some excellent corniches. We've got some weird weather coming this way (yeah, like it hasn't been weird enough lately) but by the weekend it will all be good.

Jan. 31 '05 04:00 PM Overcast Sky VarVis. Wind SW 25 k/h
Peak -7c Alpine -4c Valley 4c NewSnw 5cm  Base 127 cm

Here's an afternoon report for a change. Conditions above midstation are improving drastically. You still find that you start in excellent snow which turns in to peanutbutter further down but the further down is going further down if you know what I mean. The man figures there is more snow on the way which should get here tonight and tomorrow. I'll keep you informed.

I checked out Blackcomb yesterday, I spend some time up in 7th heaven and I must say the conditions were Reasonable to Good. I was able to ride off-piste as the Europeans like the say (that's off the runs for the rest of us). Big snow is coming according to the man but I won't celebrate until I can actually ride it!

Jan. 29 '05 08:00 AM Overcast Sky VarVis. Wind S 25 k/h

Nothing much changed people we got some snow, we may get some more but we need that epic dump and it ain't going to happen, not this weekend anyway. Conditions in the alpine are marginal with good bits if you know where to find them. The runs are groomed hardpack.

Conditions on Whistler are harsh let's not kid around. Today I'll have a look at Blackcomb. Snow is still in the forecast for the weekend keep'm crossed.

Let the serious rebuilding begin! As you can see temperatures are pretty well back to normal again and we did have some precip which was mostly snow almost all the way down to the village (but not all the way!) A few more degrees drop in temp and we can start rebuilding the lower runs .

Jan. 27 '05 09:00 AM Overcast Sky VarVis. Wind SE 20 k/h

Yesterday we actually ended up with a sunny day! Go figure. Today it's back to clouds but the temp keeps going in the right direction. One of the forecasters has the freezinglevel dropping almost into the village over the weekend! Happy days are here again?

It's still way too warm but at least the frigging rain has finally stopped. The man still has us pegged for light snow on Thursday up high only mind you, nothing for down here in the valley.

Jan. 24 '05 10:00 AM Overcast Sky VarVis. Wind SE 40 k/h
Peak -2c Alpine 0c Valley 5c NewSnw 0cm  Base 118 cm

A few more centimeters and the snowpack will have shrunk down to one meter! There is going to be precip all week long but the freezing level is coming down. The man figures the level will bounce up and down between Olympic station and the Roundhouse with Thursday seeing the level down at Oly..

The beating up continues. Heavy wet snow in the Alpine area's which keeps the avalanche bombers busy in the morning and rain further down the hill. You can still ride into the village after a day of Alpine riding.

Look, let's not beat around the bush here. The snow has been beaten up by the rain something fierce! The lower runs quite frankly suck so you'll need to stay higher up for decent skiing. The good news is that the cold is creeping back in, it's 0c at PigAlley which usually means the snowline is halfway or even further down Emerald chair.

The snow pack is being packed down as they say. It's been raining steadily top to bottom. The rest of BC is being flooded again (like last year) and everybody is pissed! This is also World SnowBoard Championship week, yeah I know, great timing.

OK so we got more snow but now it's rain time. A Tropical Punch has arrived and all we can do is hope that the amount of precipitation is kept to a minimum. For an explanation of Tropical Punch versus Pineapple Express weather check the column on the left.

Our luck is holding, it's still at or below freezing level up and down the mountain. It's early yet and it might warm up but so far so good. We also got some fresh snow, let's go and try it out.

It's snowing (lightly) right now. Much more to come if you believe the weatherman. Now for the bad news. Next week warm air is moving in and we're going to have a week of snow/ice/rain. Is it going to be mostly snow or mostly rain. With our luck so far you won't see me putting down any big bets but hope does spring eternal. Don't it?
