Here it is still October and we're having snow on the ground again. With the serious snow falling on top and the 14 day weather trend showing nothing but precipitation and low temperatures I am starting to think Early Opening!
So here we are. The bikepark has been closed for two weeks now, not much to do around here until the snow starts falling. Guess what - it started falling seriously today. Wet snow making it all the way to the valley bottom and exellent dry snow higher up. This snow will stick around and become the 09/10 base. Now where did I put that wax?
There you go, fresh snow in the Alpine and it's still September. A sign of things to come? Let's hope so. Meanwhile we've still got two weeks to go in the DH Bikepark ============================================
We had an interesting week guys (sorry I was away) we got 37 centimeters of good snow so we were riding pow in April! It's a little warm up there right now and raining (it was snowing earlier) but tomorrow we should be back to regular spring skiing.
Yes indeed you read that correctly. It's April 13 and we just got 16 cm, as a matter of fact we got 19 over the last 48 hrs and it's still snowing as I write this. Keep in mind that we already put some our garden funiture out and there it sits, covered in snow! Come and get it while it lasts.
Well what do you know, we actually got 2cm and maybe a bit more in the high alpine. Let's go ride while it lasts. The sun will poke through so it will get warmer.
Not much change. Frozen hardpack in the morning which softens up quickly or not depending on whether the sun arrives. Today is a no-sun-but-maybe-some-snow day.
After some epic riding days spring has now surely sprung. Expect frozen, groomed hardpack in the morning that will soften up during the day. Standard spring stuff.
Got some excellent riding in yesterday, couldn't see much but hope to get back today and do the same lines this time with some visibility.
And it just keeps on coming. Not in big dumps but in dribs and drabs. That 5cm yesterday sure felt like a lot more so I am hoping the 1cm reported sofartoday will feel more'ish as well. Besides it's snowing as I write this so why not expect a little extra up there. I'll go find out shall I?
We keep getting small dumps but nothing that makes much of a difference. I am looking at about 3cm of fresh snow outside my window but my guess is that by tonight it'll all be gone. Higher up on the hill of course it sticks around which softens things up nicely.
Well wat do you know? It's snowing out there. Nothing big but the man was right yesterday, let's see if he was right as to how much it's going to be.
Spring skiing is here. Groomed hardpack with slushy conditions at the end of the day in the lower areas. Some snow tonight and tomorrow says the man.
We had some mild systems pass over dumping about 6c's in the last 3 days. Just enough to keep the groomers fresh. Conditions are Spring. Hard in the morning slushy in the afternoon on the bottom. Up high (above bottom of Big Red) it's still excellent.
Two days of sun with some wisps of cloud, some wind on top but pow up to your crotch in the alpine. Oh yeah, Spring Riding at its best. We're going to get a few more centimeters over the next few days but nothing big.
No seriously guys, 47cm in the last two days, what would you call that? The wind is still blowing and it's above freezing here in the valley but up there it's pow as fas as the eye can see and we're all still waiting for the high chairs to open. Tomorrow we'll have a mix of sun and cloud with the wind easing off. Here is an inside tip for you. The peakchair lineup? It's going to be Epic tomorrow!
The keyword of the day is "wind". The high chairs did not open today except for Harmony on Whistler for a couple of hours. Big wind and no visibility. Conditions up there are going to be great when they do open up the high alpine with fresh snow (it's snowing lightly right now) and the wind flattening out the snow in the shutes and the bowls.
And 15 more centimeters. Better late then never? Nah, I would have rather seen this around Christmas. Anyway it's pow-heaven up there. Who's complaining?
One word. Epic! Be here. Can't be here? I feel your pain!
Big wind on top but hey! We made the 200cm mark after all this season. Come and celebrate our fresh pow, 12cm on top of yesterday's 16.
It started out as a clear day but you could tell something was on the way. Snow tomorrow says the man plus more after that in the days to come. Stay tuned.
So, after two days of freezing our brass ones off today it's.. -13c In The Valley! Don't worry says the man, it's going to get warmer. Hey, I worry! More snow by Friday, I'll be here when it happens.
We actually got 4 cm over two days not enough to write letters home about I am afraid. Not much snow in the forecast but some serious cold and fairly strong winds.
Snow coming tonight says the man. We're all waiting with baited breath!
We had a rain event almost to Pig Alley. Freezing temperatures after that turned the snow quite icy. We need some fresh snow and I think it's falling right now. We should get about 5cm overnight. Stay tuned.
An other 18cm but don't start celebrating yet, most of it fell in the alpine. The day started out with rain at the bottom and snow on top. In the afternoon all of a sudden thing cleared up and we ended up with a good looking day. We might get an other 2cm tomorrow.
An other big dump and they keep on coming. If this keeps up we will make the 2 meter mark next week. As a mater of fact we may make it tonight or else tomorrow, there's some big storms out there waiting to pounce. The only question is, what's the temperature going to do or rather how high on the mountain is the freezing level going to hang out.
Most excellent guys really, most excellent. Maybe it's because we haven't been spoiled this season but conditions are excellent right now. Better yet we've gotta whole shipload of snow coming this way. The freezing level might be bouncing up and down though so keep checking the report.
I am writing this day up as officially Epic! Blue skies over about 84 cm of fresh snow that fell in the last three days. Tree runs, shutes, steeps is all accessible and more importantly - fun - now.
Booyah! And an other 30 cm in the last 24 hrs. Real powder days have now arrived it's colder than at the beginning of the week so we have fresh pow on top of the heavier stuff that fell earlier. Epic Riding is Here - Now.
28 cm yesterday plus 14 today, yeah, it's starting to look like winter around here. There is much more to come as well - we could have as much as 40 cm tonight and tomorrow. Oh happy days - and by the way, congrats to Maddi and Steve with the birth of their first child
The man was correct, we finally got some fresh snow today. Let's hope he's correct about next week as well. Much more snow is the prediction. Bring it on.
And the sun just keeps on shining. Sorry guys there just isn't much to report and I am not going to make stuff up.When we get snow I'll let you know but nothing much is going to happen until Sunday afternoon at the earliest.
Blue skies as far as the eye can see and basically for the rest of the week. Fresh snow, what's that?
Spring is here guys. We're going to have sunny days for the next 5 days at least. Its 's going to be groomed hardpack for a while.
Solid days, groomed hardpack, a bit of snow, some sun. It's all good.
Well what do you know, it's almost epic up there. It's a little cool with a brisk wind but the sun is shining and hey, 11 fresh cm's! We may get some more on Tuesday says the man.
Next week starting this Sunday will be the week of snow. We'll get 5 to 10 by Monday and then more every day after that. Hey, I am just repeating what the man says. I believe 'm don't you?
And we are spring skiing again! That 22cm will have to last until Sunday but it sure made a difference especially on some of the runs that were starting to go bold and rocky.
22cm! Something to celebrate. Of course it's getting warmer right now and we have a (shall we say) brisk wind up there. Still, you can ride the trees now with all this fresh snow so the wind won't bother you.
Well waddaya know. It's actually snowing out there we'll see if it actually is going to make a difference. Pretty well everything on the mountain is open now but off piste areas are still hard work. The runs are groomed hardpack.
It's a lot warmer guys but the incoming front is bringing snow as well as warm air so what do we complain about?
So, the snow is back, most of the mountain is now accessible, life is back to normal. Conditions are groomed hardpack with a few centimeters of fresh mixed in. Tree runs and other off piste areas will become rideable again as more fresh snow accumulates, A big dump is in the forecast for this weekend.
Sorry guys, I know what you're saying "4 day since the last report?!" but there really is nothing to report. We were going to have some snow this Friday and Saturday but still nothing doing. The good news is that Symphony Chair finally opened on Whistler meaning the extreme avalanche danger has passed. The earliest possibilty of snow is now Tuesday Jan 27.
Still no news from the Western Front I am afraid. More clear skies, more spring conditions with maybe a chance of some snow this Friday and Saturday.
Not much in the way of snowreport updates around here basically because there isn't much to report. It's clear, it's sunny and it's -January?- what's up with that? There is a front moving in so we may see some snow by Wednesday. Keep'm crossed. For now it's spring skiing on groomed hardpack
No news from the western front. Sunshine galore but in the shady areas it's still cold enough for the conditions to be very hardpack. Without new snow look for runs in the sun and ride the schmoo.
This is basically it for new snow for at least a week. We have a warm spell coming up with the freezing level climbing way over the Peak starting about Tuesday. Come and ride West Coast Schmoo and leave the Gortex at home.
Snow we got and more snow we shall get - today. After today things will clear up for a few days so if you like riding in the sunshine this weekend will be yours.
We had a bit of a warm spell. Rain all the way up to Pig Alley and very heavy snow into the alpine. Let's hope this concrete snow stabilizes the avalanche alleys because the avalanche danger has been high to extreme in these here parts for the last week or so.
41 cm in 24 hours, now we're talking! It's warm(ish) today and we may get more snow. Be Here!
We had an other one of those clear but seriously cold days yesterday. Today the clouds are rolling back in and snow is a'coming not much today but a big load tomorrow.
Happy New Year!
Some snow every day and before you know it we're shredding pow. We are going to get a major dump tonight some more tomorrow and an other big one on Thursday. Bring it on!
It's Official! We've reached the 1 Meter mark before the year is out. Oh Joy. Let us now concentrate on getting that next meter on the ground, we should be good for at least half that in the next few days.
I may be waking up to up to 25cm on my driveway tomorrow. Who's complaining?
Getting closer to that meter now. More runs are opening up all the time. The man hasn't changed his mind yet, 5cm tonight 10 tomorrow and more next week. It's starting to look like a real ski resort around here.
It looks like things are slowly becoming normal around here. The man figures we'll get 5-10cm every day for the next 5 days which can't be bad. We'll get that base above a meter yet before the year is out. Stay tuned!
Well what do you know. A small deposit has been made into our snow account just in time for Christmas. More snow in the forecast for the rest of the week with big deposits being made this weekend. It looks like we'll be rolling into 2009 with a decent base after all.
Well, there you have it, a grand total of 18cm was dropped by the front that passed over yesterday and last night. Tomorrow evening the snow should start falling again and keep falling for the rest of the week. Will we get to one meter by the end of the year? Stay Tuned.
All around us snow's falling but here we're just getting the drags. 14cm last night, great stuff but we need 40 not 14! Meanwhile the ski-out into the village is now open thanks to the boys with the snowguns. More snow is on the way this coming week.
Meanwhile the coldsnap from hell shows no signs of getting the hell outta here so don't even think of going up without at least 5 layers on. Riding all the way down into the village is possible out of bounds but the mountain should open it officially tomorrow or Saturday. Weather patterns around here should return to normal (including snow!) by Sunday.
Well there you have it we're just about to break the 60cm base level. I never thought I would write something like this in the middle of December. The man says tonight and tomorrow we'll get an other 4 to 8cm.
Yeah, you may want to read those temperature figures again. -20C at the peak, this is serious brass balls weather people. Bring an extra layer, nevermind, bring Three! Anyway, we got some snow and it's starting to look like a skiresort around here.
The man has been so right lately it's downright scary. We woke up this morning to 1cm as predicted and it sure looks like the other 10cm is on it's way. More more and more bits of the mountain are becoming accessible. the Peak2Peak gondola is opening today. Let's ride!
With more snow arriving here on Friday we're finally starting to build a serious base. You can now ride down to the Olympic Station from the Roundhouse so at least that's taken care of. No more downloading from the top to bottom at the end of the day. Quality of the snow is groomed hardpack.
So, with that minor dump on the weekend things are starting to look like a real ski resort up high in the Alpine. We're all waiting for the next dump which should start just about right now and continue on through tomorrow. After that Friday would be the next drop.
Sorry about being away for a while but there really wasn't anything to report. Anyway, it looks like we're in business now. We got 10 cm's fresh plus it's cold enough for the snow guns. People are riding down from the alpine to Olympic Station and best of all it's snowing as I write this. I think we're going to be good for mid December and onwards into Xmas.
Long story short. We're riding on almost pure manmade snow. It's icy and there are only a few runs open. Not the type of conditions you drive up for from Vancouver or Seattle. First decent snow ( 5 to 10 cm) is expected this Sunday
Let's face it guys, the Thanksgiving weekend of 2008 is not going down as one for the books. It's 4 degrees Celsius up there right now with some miserly light rain. We will just have to get through this weekend with the little snow that we have and start laying some serious base beginning Monday night when the cold air comes back in.
And we are officially open. Yesterday was an early opening on Whistler Mountain only and the place was hopping. Today both mountains will be open. The snow is of course mostly on the groomed runs where there is lots of manmade. Guys went out of bounds of course including yours truly but that's not recommended unless you brought your rockboard or skies. Guys where also riding down to Olympic station but that's also officially out of bounds until we get more snow.
EARLY OPENING! Okay so I was wrong we're opening the day before American Thanksgiving hey, what can I say, life's like that. We have a 55cm base right now and it's snowing above 1200 meters (Mid Station) so there will be more by the time we get up there tomorrow.
Right, so here's the deal. We will be open on American Thanksgiving with plenty of snow in the Alpine that is now for sure. The question is will we open a few days earlier? W/B would love to open early believe me, it all depends on how much snow we get over the weekend. Stay tuned!
Okay a quick report. It's cold enough (barely) for the snowguns to be laying down some base. Tomorrow is going to be warm but no rain so that's alright. The good news - we've got some major dumps coming this way on Thursday and Friday. Early opening after all? Dare I dream?
Yup. It's like springtime around here. Eight degrees c! what's up with that? Anyway I haven't reported anything because there was nothing to report. Forget early opening let's just see if we can get this sucker open on time. (That would be Nov 27. in case you missed it)
It's early season so we have al lot of yoyo effect where the freezing level goes up and down like a, well, you know. Anyway right now it's freezing up there, we had some fresh snow with more to come today plus the guns of winter are blasting man made snow. It's starting to look good from down here.
Yep. Snow is falling in the valley. It won't last of course down here but it's still a sign of things to come. Meanwhile the base in the alpine is building, time to get waxing.
And there you have it, while America is off to the polls Whistler is getting the snow ready. We know y'all want to come and celebrate after the election so we figure we better be ready for you.
So here is the thing, we haven't had any snow that stuck around so far. We've had some falls but it all melted away again. Right now there is a thin layer on top of rock but we really need that major dump to get us in the mood.
Okay guys, we've got serious snow in the alpine now, the type that'll stick around. They're putting the last touches on the peak2peak gondola. The bikepark is closing this coming weekend which is also when the Turkey sale is on (last year's stuff, cheap!). The village is filling with people carrying a serious snow jones.
And we're back with 6 cm of snow in the Alpine -that's outside the Roundhouse restaurant doors in case you're wondering. Is it gonna stay, yeah as if! Still it's a good start to the new season if you ask me. It's good to be back in the snow business. ==========new season=============
So there you have it, Whistler Mountain is closed. Blackcomb will keep going until June 8th but only half the mountain is open! Be aware that you have to be able to get down a blue slope if you want to get off the mountain. Blackomb's only green slope is closed. The only way to get up the hill is via the Excalibur Gondola starting in theVillage. Also you have to download via that gondola at the end of the day. |
